Do I need a serial link between redundant servers ?

The simple answer is no. To support existing systems the software can work with the serial link but the usual method of running alarm providers is for both servers to provide all of the alarms all of the time (HotStandby mode). The clients now select their server and disregard the alarms from the standby whereas early implementations queried all the servers for alarms.
